Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower, located two miles north of Mountain in Oconto County, stands as a relic of Wisconsin’s fire protection history. Built in 1932 by the Aermotor Company, it was originally placed elsewhere in the Nicolet National Forest before being relocated in 1935.
This galvanized steel tower, with an interior stairway leading to the cab, was a key part of a fire detection network developed by the USDA Forest Service and Wisconsin Conservation Commission. Of the 19 towers that once watched over the Nicolet, only two remain. The last fire spotted from the tower was in 1970. Once manned by CCC crews, it now stands open to the public.
