Cruising down R-109 in Oconto County feels like stumbling into Wisconsin’s Everglades — no gators here, but plenty of wild wetland vibes.

This 2.3-mile paved stretch rolls through a huge expanse of coastal marshes that tie into the Oconto Marsh.

Towering cattails line both sides like nature’s walls, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch blooms of blue flag iris and swamp milkweed along with marsh ferns and lowland grasses swaying in the breeze.

Midway through, trees arch overhead to form a chill green tunnel, and there’s even a century-old farmstead lurking in the distance. A perfect mellow ride through a swampy wonderland.
