The Rat River Wildlife Area in Winnebago County spans nearly 4,000 acres of marshes, sedge meadows, and forested lowlands along the Rat River, which flows into the Wolf River. Once a source of “wiregrass” for rugs and packing material, it’s now managed for wildlife and waterfowl habitat. Originally a fishery site in 1963, it shifted to a wildlife focus in 1978.
Today’s efforts restore sedge meadows, manage cattails, and maintain swamp hardwoods. Marsh hay cutting is still used to control brush and support migratory birds. Access points include North Loop Road, County M, Hillcrest Road, and Shady Lane.
