The Garland Homestead

The Hamlin Garland Homestead in West Salem is the boyhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland. Built in 1860, this historic site showcases period furnishings, artifacts, and memorabilia from Garland’s life and career. The house offers a glimpse into rural 19th-century Wisconsin life and the inspirations behind Garland’s celebrated writings. Managed by the West Salem Historical Society, the Homestead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers tours and events that honor Garland’s literary legacy and connection to the area.
The homestead is opens Memorial Day to Labor Day, for tours.  Tour hours are Monday through Friday from 1pm – 4pm.
