West of the Lake Gardens

Tucked along Lake Michigan in Manitowoc, the West Foundation’s West of the Lake Gardens unfolds across 6½ acres designed by Ruth West between the 1930s and ’50s. It’s open seasonally—Saturdays through early October, daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Admission and parking are absolutely free, making it a serene spot to stroll through vividly themed garden rooms. Nearby, the Lester Bentley Gallery welcomes art lovers on weekends—from Memorial Day to Labor Day—11 a.m. to 4 p.m., also for free. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon amid historic horticulture and local artistry.
