Rock Island Ferry

When you’ve hit the Washington Island ferry, keep the vibe going with the passenger-only Rock Island Ferry—also called the Karfi. Running from late May to early October, this small ferry shuttles campers, hikers, and day-trippers on a mellow 10-minute ride from Jackson Harbor to Rock Island State Park. Vehicles and bikes aren’t allowed, so the real charm is in the quiet approach to a rugged, unspoiled island. Once ashore, explore 912 acres of scenic trails, rustic campsites, historic Pottawatomie Lighthouse, Norse Ranic boathouse, and thick woods perched atop Lake Michigan bluffs. It’s a peaceful, nature-drenched escape that makes getting there half the journey.
