Hedmark Pines State Natural Area

Hedmark Pines, a State Natural Area since 2007, features natural red pine forests along the Popple River in northeast Wisconsin. The area includes late-successional pine stands, younger forests with towering pines, and a forest floor covered in pine needles, bracken fern, twinflower, and blueberry.
It holds three small watersheds with sedge meadows, alder thickets, shrub-carr, and bogs. A rare plant species grows here, along with quality jack pine stands featuring unique plants like Cladonia and lady’s tresses. The site includes three miles of the Popple River with riparian zones, sedge meadows, and floodplain forests. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
