Waubesa Wetlands

Waubesa Wetlands State Natural Area is a serene 150-hectare natural area just south of Madison, known for its rare plant life and high-quality wetlands. Fed by cool, mineral-rich springs, this area features sedge meadows, fens, marshes, and shrub carrs. It’s home to unique plants like grass-of-Parnassus, Riddell’s goldenrod, and lesser fringed gentian, along with a diverse mix of birds including sandhill cranes, black terns, bitterns, and teal. With no formal trails, the best way to explore is by canoe, drifting quietly through one of Wisconsin’s most biologically rich and peaceful wetland ecosystems. Recognized as a Wetland Gem, Waubesa Wetlands is a calm, mind-clearing escape into nature.
