The Historic Indian Agency House

Built in 1832 for Indian Agent John Kinzie and his wife Juliette, the Historic Indian Agency House sits at the legendary portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. Juliette later wrote about their frontier life in her book Wau-Bun. This federal-style home is one of Wisconsin’s oldest and still stands on its original site—a key spot linking the Great Lakes to the Mississippi.
Restored in 1932 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the house is filled with period furnishings and open to the public. It’s a mellow dive into early Wisconsin history, perfect for a chill and thoughtful detour.
