Old Fairwater Hemp Mill

Brothers John and Towne Miller established Fairwater Hemp Company in 1916. The Fairwater Hemp Company was a pioneer in the hemp industry. The company became known for its production of hemp rope, a crucial material used in various industries. The company began producing electricity using the byproducts of hemp manufacturing. They burned hemp hurds to fuel a steam engine, creating electricity to power its operations. This marks the first documented use of hemp as an energy source. The mill’s brick chimney still stands today, a historical landmark visible to those cruising through the area.
